St. John Restaurants & Bars

Not a comprehensive list by any means, but at least a good start given that there are more great places to eat per square mile on St. John than anywhere short of New York City. Please note the dollar signs after the name: one $ indicates inexpensive, two $$ indicates moderate, and three $$$ indicates rather pricey, all relative to island standards, of course.

Skinny Legs $ Legendary island bar and space station in Coral Bay, not to be missed. Great burgers, no fries; chips. Lives have changed here.

Uncle Joes BBQ $ On the corner across from the Post Office. Don't let the simple appearance fool you, some of the best BBQ take-out in the world. Chicken or ribs with a couple of sides for under $15. For those nights when you just want to kick back and relax by the pool. Call & order ahead, show up when they tell you to, and even then be prepared to wait another 15 minutes or so. Ilon time mon.

Woody's Seafood Saloon $ Downtown Cruz Bay across from the bank. Famous happy hour and only late night eatery, largely seafood menu. It's where you had to drive around all the folks hanging out on/in the street.

Rhumb Lines $$$ Strangely located (what around here isn't?) in the center of the main block of buildings in Cruz Bay, a nonetheless fantastic restaurant serving "Pacific Rim & Tropical Cuisines" in a wonderful outdoor setting. No view, but we still go there every trip. So will you. (This is also where Kenny Chesney and Renee Zellweger held their wedding reception, so there's that too.)

High Tide $$ Open air bar and grill type restaurant, right on the water in Cruz Bay (you saw it on your right getting off the ferry).  Funky live music in the evenings, relaxed atmosphere, ilon groove.

The Fish Trap $$ Voted “Best Seafood in the VI”, in a casual and tropical open-air setting. If you've never tasted Corvina, this is the place to try it.

Lime Inn $$ Order the Bleu Cheese Steak, then the Chocolate Mousse, then you can die… No wait – come back tomorrow for the grilled lobster, then you can die. Reservations recommended.

The Banana Deck $$ Casual outdoor dining, great bar.

Cafe Roma $$ For when you just need a pizza even if you are in de ilons.

Beach Bar $ Happenin' spot right on the beach in Wharfside Village. Voted Best Beach Bar On St. John every year since 2005. Favorite local hangout, can't be all bad.

Morgans Mango $$ Caribbean cuisine & tropical drinks. Can’t go wrong. Reservations recommended.

Miss Lucy's $$ Traditional caribbean like before the cruise ships came.  Sunday Jazz Brunch is legendary (get there early!).  Right on the beach past Coral Bay on 107, turn in where you see the small sign on the left and usually lots of goats. Dine under a sea grape tree and listen to the waves. Can't do this in Kansas.

Island Blues $ Island bar just past Coral Bay on 107. You can sit in the bar or at a table 3 feet from the water's edge if you like that island experience.

La Tapa $$$ Outstanding food in downtown Cruz Bay. Mediterranean/Spanish flair. No view, but worth an evening nonetheless. Reservations recommended.

Asolare $$$ Beautiful view overlooking Cruz Bay harbor and St. Thomas. European/Asian fusion cuisine. Reservations recommended.

Ocean Grill $$$ Contemporary cuisine with a fresh tropical flair.  Beautiful woodwork, great atmosphere with equally great food.  In Mongoose Junction.

ZoZo's Restaurant $$$ Formerly located at Gallows Point, now within Caneel Bay Resort. Stunning atmosphere, still elegant Italian fare and still with a great view of the lights of St. Thomas shimmering in the distance.  Always great service. Not to be missed.

Ocean 362 $$$ Located at Gallows Point, chef Shaun Brian brings you a unique “island to table” cuisine that has to be experienced at least once. With it’s beautiful setting overlooking Cruz Bay and St. Thomas beyond, Ocean 362 is a unique blend of wonderful dining and equally stunning location that will make for a dinner you won’t forget. Insider’s tip: make reservations for the upstairs bar seating - even better view, great conversation, even the occasional free appetizer perhaps!
